Sepak Takraw- Game of South East Asia

October 27, 2009 by odysseyist

A Volley of  Flying Kicks To End the Day With A Bang!

A popular sport in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The game is believed to have originated in the 15th century Malacca Sultanate.

High Kick!

It is basically a game that  resembles the game of volleyball except only foot, knee, chest and head are allowed to touch the rattan ball. The only time when hands are permitted is during the service part of the game where the serving side designates a thrower to pitch the ball to the ball-kicker (Tekong- no pun intended).

I've Got A Kick Out of You

In the subsequent actions, fast and furious flying kicks would ensue. And this is when you could hear the oooh-&-ahhhh sounds of agony & ecstasy being belted out. The ensuing actions are usually over in just a few seconds,  just like tennis. So it is worth to glue your eyes on the game.

And you missed it again! Hiya! Don’t talk talk talk lah!

Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting

Sepak Takraw is, unfortunately, mainly a game confined to the nations of South East Asia . In order to popularise and internationalise the sport would require the de-emphasis of the game being primarily associated with the Southeast Asian nations. More announcements & publicity in the internatoional language- such as English- should also be made easily available at the events venue. That’s a fact of life whether you like it or not. I am a realist in more ways than one.

High Jump or Sepak Takraw?

Musa Cup is the main sporting event for the Sepak Takraw game in Sabah. This year, 2009, the game was held on 22 May. Hiya! And you missed it again one more time.
