Here’s Wishing You A Happy New Year

————————May Your New Year Be A Good One—————–

 We will open the book.
Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk!

Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk!

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Colouring & Lego Contest

The day the grrown-ups were let loose to be creative and be kids again. Honey, I shrunk myself. That’s right, folks! That was the day kids could run free and be themselves and be king for the day.  Yeah, back to the good old days where kids would be kids.

Moms & Pops day

Moms & Pops Day

Recently, Mothercare & Kids Avenue organised a Colouring & Lego contest at Time Square. The kids and parents came out in droves to show their talents and creativity. It was a fun day out for all. But judging from the faces of the parents, I am sure the parents had a swell time more than the kids. Glad to see everyone was satisfied at the end of the day- especially the parents. It was a day well spent, including for me, snapping away like a kid.

Slowly,Slowly Catch A Monkey- Whatever That Means

Now, let’s hear it from the MC MC compere!

A Christmas event for kids at newly opened KK Times Square attracted all sorts of cute kids to join in the competitions and games. MC-ing for a kids event had me VERY worried, kids-lover that I am, esp when I was asked to learn the Thomas and Friends theme song.. Wha..??

But having agreed to do the event earlier on, I had no choice. Luckily we didn’t have to sing, just d kids.  Haha…..  Colouring comp was funny, wif parents ‘helping’ and 1 perfectionist child who I found hilarious, yet so cute. Lego comp was mind-boggling, as 1 kid from “ships n castles” group made a robot (?!) and other interesting creations were made.

As for the Q & A sessions, kids were everywhere!! We had kids hankering for the balloons, clasping the prizes tight and kids despondent for not being picked.

Still, it was a very entertaining afternoon. D event was for 2 days, but ‘unfortunately’ i cud only be there for Day 1. I’m sure day 2 was equally fascinating.

KK City Mosque

Considered to be one of the landmarks of Kota Kinabalu, built to look as if it’s floating on top of a blue lagoon. It can be seen from a distance along the Coastal Highway.  As you get closer,  the aesthetic beauty of  the mosque appears in awe- inspiring view right before your eyes . It is supposed to be modelled after the Nabawi Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Blue Moaque

Blue Moaque

The Japanese expatriates have a special name for it, the Blue Mosque of  KK- which is quite fitting, really, as its dome is in blue and golden colours to blend in with the blue sky to give a spectacular vista of the whole architectural structure.

As today is Al-Hijra in the muslim world- the Islamic New Year.

Selamat Ma’al Hijrah

To get there

By bus- take the City Shuttle Bus, in air-con comfort, going on the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) route- bus fare around RM1.50. Taxi will set you back RM12-18 one way.

Api-Api- the Town that Rises from the Ashes

Kota Kinabalu, affectionately known as KK by the locals, is the coastal capital city of Sabah, where sandy beaches with tall coconut & palm trees can be seen in abundance. Originally known as Jesselton, named in honour of  Sir Charles Jessel, a high ranking officer of the then British North Borneo Company. It underwent name change in the 1960s when Sabah (then North Borneo) became independent and joined Malaya to form the federation of Malaysia. KK is also known as Api Api (Fire ! Fire!)- so called as it supposedly derived its name from the time when KK was actually located in the Pulau Gaya island opposite the present mainland location, but got burnt down by pirates pervasive at the time. The present capital location was relocated from the island after it was razed and destroyed.

New Town

New Town

Kota Kinabalu has now become a modern city with modern facilities. Shops, malls, restaurants and entertainment joints are now dotted around the city centre. Nightspots are not in any short supply at all- plenty of choice selections to pick from both for the city folks and visitors alike.

KK Proper

Some interesting places to visit when you are in KK:
Australia Place, Atkinson Clock Tower, Tugu Peringatan Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre, KK Coastal Highway, Double Six Monument, Signal Hill Observatory, Gaya Street Sunday Market, KK Esplanade, Sabah State Museum & Heritage Village, KK Waterfront, Jesselton Point,  State Mosque and City Mosque.
Merdeka Memorial

Some of these places can be found in my other posts, others will be covered in the future posts

On the outskirts of the city there are some notable places to pay a visit as well:

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (Zoo), Monsopiad Cultural Village, Petegas War Memorial, Kasigui, Donggongon, Poh Toh Tze temple, Sabah Foundation Building, Tun Fuad Stephen Park, North Borneo Railway, St Michael Church, Tanjung Aru Beach, Tungku Abdul Rahman Park isands.

For those who prefer to venture further afield from the  city itself, you will find plenty of  tourist attractions in their natural environmental settings- pristine rainforests, sandy beaches and islands. And for those who are adventurous enough- jungle trekkings, mountain-climbings, island hoppings & white water-raftings are fully served by a few tour operators located at Wisma Sabah and around KK city.

Night On The Waterfront

If entertainment & relaxation are what you need, then head on down this way, the Marlon Brando kind of place. If you happen to be on the prowl for something delectable, then sit back and relax to be pampered with the galore of food to choose from. It is the in-place for both the locals and visitors alike. Take a leisurely stroll along the esplanade during the twilight hour to watch the sun go down and blow your mind away. Entertainment & grubs are here to be had, be it fun or food galore, you can have it all so long as your wallet is full of dosh. As for me, I’d rather keep my dosh in my pocket to see another day. Then again, the missus would rather blow it all away. Now scrubs are what we are having. A night of pleasure turns into a day of hard slosh. No regret, though! The sun will sure rise again, comes another day. So, fun-loving guys and gals, come on down!

Restaurants

Kohinoor North Indian Restaurant– the only North Indian restaurant in KK city. Food served is piping hot, unlike other local Indian restaurants. Prices are at upscale-dining price range.

The Aussie Barbeque & Bar– as the name implies, everything Aussie is served here. Pricey is the name, Barbie is the food.

Toscani’s– the Italian & Spanish restaurant serving pizza, pasta and seafood platters.

BarSu- a new restaurant on the block replacing the former Atlantis restaurant. A mish-mash of a restaurant serving Italian & Thai cuisines.

Grand Port View Seafood Restaurant– a popular restaurant that serves anything related to the sea. Be prepared to splash out for the mouth-watering dishes. An arm and a leg will come your way.

Seaview at No Extra Charge for Al Fresco Dining

Pubs and Entertainment

The Loft-  accommodation not included, apparently. I wasn’t to know that.

Cock & Bull- if you fancy a bit of non-sensical chit-chat.

The Shamrock Irish Bar- pissed as a fart I was!

Novus Karaoke Lounge– sing your heart out and nobody cares.

BED (Best Entertainment Destination)- a misnomer this place is. I expected a good night kip but they blasted the music away to keep me on my toes. Dance may be the more appropriate name.

The Coffe Bean-  needs no introduction

To Get There

Get to the Warisan Square, it’s right facing the shopping mall.
