The Vanishing Acts

Abracadabra!

Yep! The lions & unicorns were doing a hide & seek this year. Hardly seen any out and about and they seemed to have passed over the residential areas altogether. The excuses given were: not enough Ang Pow (Hong bao) collected to be worth paying the visits. Oh well, bang goes another new year tradition. The economy is really hanging over the minds of the dance troupes. Even on the day when there were supposed to be lots of dance troupes out in force to  call on shops for new year greetings, only a few and far between were sighted. The rate it is going we may yet see the total disappearance of  the lion dance troupe. The future trend looks to be that  unless you invite the troupe to your house with a big Ang Pow; otherwise, no dice! That……. is about it- the future outlook.

Wow!  Kara, You Floored Me!

(CNY Roundup 3)

This year Kara decided to stay the same but with different lanterns & minor adjustments. The effects still look spectacular & fresh with a classy look & spring atmospheres to it. Well done again, Kara! Definitely catching up with 1Borneo. Come next year, hopefully Kara will overtake 1Borneo in festive presentations.

And, wait for it, lions greeted the shoppers with gaiety on the traditional first day (fourth day of CNY) of shop re-opening. Exciting & agitated kids and some grown-ups were swarming all over the place fighting for a vantage point.  What is it about lion dance that, without fail, draws a massive crowd and hyper-active kids and adults swooning all over with ecstatic joy?  It’s a mystery to me.

For a change, one lion (why are there so many white lions?) climbed up a stilt pole in quest of the green. Long time since we had the traditional pole climbing routine. Nowadays we tend to have stage poles where lions are hopping and jumping around the poles.

Acrobats & Musicians, Ooh La La! (CNY Roundup 2)

1Borneo beats everyone else hands down again. The hypermall was dressed up in crimson red (did I hear scarlet? Tough!) and ready to woo the New Year big spenders or perhaps window shoppers, rather. Mind you, the car parks were absolutely filled to the brims and spilled over to the open space with indiscriminate parkings the preferred choice.  Rain again!  We should call it New Rainy Days instead.

Yes, Brolly! I Certainly Need It After the Show

Yes, Brolly! I Certainly Need It After the Show

Throughout the Chinese New Year holiday week acrobats from China & local musicians were giving their all to wow the apprciative audiences. But I somehow missed the show in the rush to take pictures and off to my next destination with more gastronomic adventures. I don’t seem to have any remnant impressions of the performances or the place except from the photos taken. Next time, got to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the holidays instead. No more yummy engagements! We will see, I hear you say?

On The Night When Everybody Is Watching Everybody Watching Everybody (Spring Festival Roundup 1)

That is what the Chinese New Year Night Market Fair is all about. Let’s join in and rub shoulders with whoever and whomever and end up buying whatever you don’t need. Fell for it every time.

The Crush!

The Crush!

Rainfall was still with us in the earlier part of the day and there I was thinking- “Huh! It’s gonna be a washed-out night!”  But, Lo & Behold, it stopped around seven in the evening and time for out and about watching you watching me.  No idea what kick we get out of that but keep on repeating the same ritual every year. This year saw the exponential surge of hawker stalls plying their trades. Was there any corresponding  increase in the volume of crowds? Can’t say, looked the same to me. One thing is for sure, the night prowlers are coming out later & later with each passing year. I remember years back the crowds dwindled down to only a few stragglers after 11pm; but now the crowds only build up to a crescendo after 10 or 10:30 pm. How time has changed. KK only wakes up after 10pm- that’s the trend I notice about 5 or 6 years ago.

In case you are interested for next year’s fair, the CNY Night Market Fair in Kota Kinabalu is usually held two days prior to the Chinese New Year. The venue is at & around the Central Market near KK Plaza and Segama. Be prepared to fight through the sea of people. Go for broke!
