Remembering June the Sixth

On June the sixth, 1976, a plane dropped from the sky, carried with it the then newly elected Chief  Minister of Sabah & six other state cabinet ministers. All on board perished in that fatal plane crash tragedy on that fateful day. Conspiracy theories were abound at the time but no conclusive evidence was ever put forward.

The monument thus marks the spot where the plane came down. At that time, the place was actually a Water Village surrounded by wooden huts on stilt-poles. Recently the place has been re-developed & spruced up with luxury flats in its surroundings. A food court- with choices of  Malaysian, Japanese, Korean, Western food- is in the vicinity in case you feel peckish after a day out lounging around the park. Although it is sometimes referred to as a park, I would rather call it a Square as not much greenery can be seen in the place. Unless you count the grass field as one. The prices of food and drinks there are a bit on the high side, but, as always, it’s a case of  “willing buyers, willing sellers”.

I would recommend visiting the place as a relaxing day out, just for whiling the day away. The place is also known as Grace Garden or Grace Point. Sutera Harbour, I think , is the resort  managing the place.

Making Your Way There

Taxi: mention Grace Point and Double Six Monument to be sure. Negotiate your fare first before taking your journey.Taxis are all metered- supposedly.
