Bird-watchers of the genuine kind can have a spot of bird ogling at the stretch of the KK (Likas) Coastal Highway, collecively known as Tanjung Lipat. Eagles can be observed gliding along high above the Peak Condominium. Further up the road near to the vicinity of City Mosque (otherwise known as Blue Mosque by the Japanese expatriates), other species of birds, such as egrets & herons, can also be sighted in the swamps or mangroves.
The famous KK landmarks, Yayasan Sabah (Sabah Foundation Rotunda) & City Mosque, can also be seen along this stretch of road.
There is also a KK Wetland Centre nearby, which we shall cover in the near future. Don’t forget to bring along a pair of powerful binoculars. Meanwhile, have a feast of bird-admiring to your heart’s content. Be sure not to mention it to your beloveds while you are doing a spot of bird-ogling.
Take a City Mosque bus from Wawasan Plaza. Ask to be alighted at the stop just before the roundabout nearby Likas Square. If you are from out of town, taxi would be a more viable option. Arrange the time for return journey with cabbie in advance.

Let’s take a trip down the memory lane to where, once upon a time, passenger & freight ships, great & small, docked to load and unload goods (and passengers) serving the Jesselton (now called Kota Kinabalu- KK) town folk needs. This location was once also where locals celebrated festivals with water carnival activities. As little as 4 years back it was still teeming with cargo ships docking to drop off goods, especially during the three major festivals- Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Christmas. But as with progress everywhere the shipping port has now been moved to a bigger port area and further away from the city.
The old Sabah Port has now been revamped and spruced up with a new lease of life. After undergoing major renovation and refurbishment, it’s now turned into a ferry terminal cum entertainment night spot. Now officially renamed Jesselton Point to bring a nostalgia touch of colonial atmospheres back to this port where once British colonial officers travelled to & from their colonial offices at this far corner of the world.
Shops and cafes are now lined up along a row by the waterfront serving food and selling handicrafts. Mouth watering Western & Asian food fares can be had here. There is also a pub (bar) at the far end of the shop row for those fancying a night out painting the town red.
The KK ferry terminal is serving two main destinations- one for the Labuan Duty-free Island and the other for day/overnight trippers bound for Tunku Rahman Marine Park islands dotted around Kota Kinabalu city.
For the sports inclined, there is also a footsal stadium (Indoor Soccer Arena) adjoining the Ticketing office and food court.
To get there:
Get to Wisma Merdeka and look out for Coffee Bean café. From the outside of this coffee shop, walk towards Wisma Sabah, then keep walking at the same direction for about 15 minutes. Once you see an archway that says Jesselton Point, you have arrived. Have a groovy time while there.
